036 – Pick up a Duck

Hello, kiddos! As you can see, I'm not entirely moved in yet, but I don't want to wait any longer! I am going to cut myself some slack, however. For now, I'm sticking to one update every month and I'll start with the easier, shorter questions. Don't worry, we'll get back to the heavy stuff in no time! I just want to do a good job with it. Okay, enough chatter! Let's get into it! William Bee-Nard asks: Hey, how did you pick up the duck? I want to hold a duck too. A disclaimer before we start: DO NOT PICK UP WILD BIRDS. Birds are prone to carrying parasites and diseases, like BIRD FLU. And if that's not enough for you, all animals deserve agency. Don't bother animals for no good reason. You can just look at them and let them live their lives. With that settled, let's talk about how to pick up a duck when you need to. This works with chickens, and other similarly sized birds. When picking up a duck, you want to do it calmly, safely and securely. If you spook the duck, it could hurt itself or you! Calmly approach the duck from behind. The aim is to lock the wings and prevent the duck from flapping. Place your thumbs firmly but gently just below the wing joint. If you put your hands too high, you won't be able to pick up the duck. Too low and the duck will easily slip its wings out and run away. Once I have a good grip, I like to hold the duck close to my body. It helps with stability, and I like to think it calms the duck. Once you're done carrying the duck, release it gently and calmly, close to the ground. We don't want to scare or hurt the duck in any way. Again, don't pick up birds just for fun! And if you need to pick up a duck, wash your hands after! Safety first! That's it for now, kiddos! It's good to be back in the comic saddle again! I love you!
