034 – Dad Hobbies

Hello, kiddos! It's that time again! Axel Volp asks... Axel Volp: Which is your favorite 'dad hobby'? Asking so I can make a fanart of you. Oh my. I do love a fanart. As for dad hobbies... since I'm your dad, I guess all my hobbies are dad hobbies. I like working with my hands a lot. It feels good to make things. I knit and crochet, and last year I started making little area rugs. I want to get better at sewing and clothing repair. I like wood working too, but it's harder to do in an apartment. Maybe I should try whittling. We're in the slow process of finding a new place to live, and I want to get into home renovation once we're settled. I love building with LEGO and often make battle maps for the DnD campaign I'm running. And I like making things with papier mache, sculptures mostly but some day I want to try masks. Oh, gardening! I only have a couple of house plants right now but I awnt to grow my own herbs and vegetables. I've been looking into hydroponics and fish tank gardening. I love cooking, fermenting... making jam and preserves. From time to time I get really into making desserts, and cookies. I don't read as much as I used to, but whenever I get the chance... oh boy, it's the best. I'd also like to get back into animation and 3D modelling. But maybe history is my one true love... I think about the Roman Republic almost every day. Reading about folklore, historical recipes... I have some theoretical hobbies too, stuff I want to try but haven't been able to get into yet. Like making my own candles out of stumps, or throwing ceramics! Oh, I tried black smithing a few times, that was really fun! The last six months or so I've been learning programming - easy stuff for now, but the dream is to make a little game. I was super into historical martial arts a couple of years ago, like archery and fencing. It wasn't the right time to do it seriously then, but maybe I can get back to it some day. Speaking of getting back into it, when I was a kid I did horseback riding but had to stop because of scoliosis. But I'd like to do that again, casually. Oh, and music of course! I played the recorder for years, and I want to pick that up again. And... I’d like to learn the ukulele, maybe the banjo. I have my grandpa’s accordion, so it’d be nice to know how to play it. I’ve also always wanted to learn a little bit of piano, and violin. Oh, theatre! The love and light of my life! What I wouldn't give for a nice, local theatre group right now! Languages are fun, too. I study italian right now, and I speak a little bit of spanish. I can speak a little danish, but understand it better. I'm learning japanese but it's difficult. Sorry, kid. Picking a favorite seems pretty much impossible. There's just so much you can do in life, there's no way I can limit myself to just one or two things. What are some of your favorite hobbies? Do you have an unusual interest? Whittle on, kiddo. I love you.
