031 – Follow Your Heart

Hello, kiddos! Another day, another question! Sarahak1786 asks... Sarahak1786: Question! What does it mean to 'follow your heart'? Have you ever done that? Follow your heart is, I think, a tricky phrase. It doesn't really explain anything, does it? Sometimes it can even sound dismissive. C'mon, make a decision already! Just follow your heart, we're late for lunch! Since it's such a vague phrase, I think you need to decide for yourself what it means to you. If it means anything at all. For me, it's less a thing you tell someone else and more a decision you make for yourself. It's what happens when you do something that's right, but maybe not smart. I've done it a few times in my life, to varying degrees. One big one was bringing my bestie with me when I moved up north for art school. He was in a situation he desperately had to get out of, and although I was a poor student in a tiny apartment, I saw a way to help him. It was not a smart choice. But it was the only choice I could live with. NOTE: I had to rewrite this alt text to avoid getting caught in filters. There's also the financial choices. Not only am I a comic artist (which is bad for the wallet) but I've also turned down jobs because they weren't for me. For example, I had a comic job offer a few years ago with POC characters. I am very white. I turned it down for that reason, and the job went to someone closer to the background of the characters. In a way, I guess follow your heart means follow your conscience. You come to a crossroad — on one side, you have safety, security, maybe financial gain. On the other, you have the unknown. Danger, maybe. Loss, perhaps. But you know in your heart which path you have to take, no matter the consequences. Let me know what you think in the comments! What does ‘follow your heart’ mean to you?
