022 – Goth

Hey kiddos! It’s question time! Maxitronium: I wanna ask, is it ok to be goth? I’m really dark and gothy, so I just need some approval. I’m a guy that really enjoys sad and generally goth things, my wardrobe is mostly black and white to complete the look, but I’m not here for style. I’m here to talk about how everyone perceives me as a sad, depressive person. This has twice prevented me from getting a girlfriend (they both thought that I just wasn’t ready because of what I enjoyed, when in reality, that’s all to it, I just enjoy sad music) How do I fix that? Okay. Let’s set some things straight, to begin with. It is okay to be goth. This goes for any interest by the way: there is no upper age limit to enjoying things. There’s no actual dress code for people over 20.  I’m sorry if I sound a little harsh here, but this really gets my goat. There is nothing to fix. You’re doing great.  If you ask me, it’s people who seem to think that things like age, gender or sexuality is a deciding factor in what you can and cannot enjoy- well, they got a lot of growing up to do. Saying someone is childish or immature because they, say, like a certain type of music or media, is in itself a big sign of emotional immaturity and insecurity!  Either they’re afraid because they themselves don’t want to be judged for not fitting in, or they don’t know the first thing about you and what you’re like, and they don’t care to find out. Chances are both are true. Let me tell you, when you get to my age? There’s nothing more attractive than a person who knows what they’re about and lives that truth. And there’s nothing more boring than someone who bends to whatever is trendy, or drops aspects of their personality because they’re “too old to watch cartoons”. If you like the way you dress and the music you listen to, go for it. Life is too short. We can’t waste time making ourselves smaller than we are. And the people that really matter... they will notice you. It may take awhile, but you will find each other. One day you’ll find a hot goth girlfriend and you’ll actually have something in common! Carry on, my beautiful children of the night. I love you with my entire black little heart.
