021 – What’s Orange

Question! Time! It’s! Question Time! This one is from WrittenInInk! WrittenInInk: I have an extremely important question for you: what are some of your favorite dad jokes? I have an entire book of them that I used to keep by my bed Y’know, this sounds like an easy enough question to answer but let me tell you... I’ve been thinking about it non-stop since I got it. What counts as a dad joke? Is it just puns, or do dad jokes have some other quality to them? Is it the reaction that makes it a dad joke? Is every joke a dad joke, as long as you groan at it? There’s the other side of it — in my role as Dad, are all my jokes by definition dad jokes? What are my jokes? I sat with this for months. I asked my partner: what do I think is funny? ‘Everything’, he said. No help at all. Clearly I had to solve this one on my own, so I started paying attention to what I thought was funny. My favorite dad joke has to be somewhere in there, right? Turns out, I only laugh at Captain Haddock answering the phone in the bath, memes where you spell things like pakige and Bondulance, and linguistic or visual jokes that sneak up on you and steal your wallet when you’re not looking. And maybe that’s what a dad joke is, a turn of phrase or pun that comes out of left field. Not mean, not complicated, just unexpected. So there’s some kind of definition for it. On the other hand, do I have to think a joke is funny for it to be my favorite? There are plenty of dad jokes I don’t laugh at, but I like the way they’re constructed. Does that count? So we’re back on square one and I start to doubt myself. Do I even know any dad jokes? After an extensive search online I finally came to the conclusion that...  ...maybe I’m just more into a good visual gag. Sorry I couldn’t get to the bottom of this one. Sometimes Your Dad just can’t do it, I guess. Tell me your favorite dad jokes in the comments!  Until next time! Love you kiddo!
