013 – Tie a Knot

Heya, kiddos! It's question time! RockyRoad-icecream asks... 'Hey dad! How do you tie a tie? I’m trans so... my dad never taught me.'  I got you, kiddo. Of course I’ll show you how to tie a tie.  Dadvice Episode 13: Tie a Knot I have some experience with ties. My dad taught me how to tie one when I was a teenager. I'm not sure why. I wasn't out as trans back then, and he wasn't the most, uh... observant or supportive. A few years later, I worked at a fancy restaurant where the waitstaff had to wear ties and waistcoats. So regardless of your gender, knowing how to tie a tie can be a good skill to have! You never know when it might come in handy! Here's the thing, though. I was taught that if you've done it properly, you should be able to pull the tie from both ends... ...without there being a knot in the middle. Ahem. As you can see, the way I do it isn't correct. However! It is easy, it makes an adjustable knot and it looks exactly the same as a real tie knot. There are plenty of guides online if you want to do it the 'right' way, or the Windsor way, or the Cthulhu way. This is Your Dad's way! First off, loop it around your neck, right side out. It should be easy to figure out which side that is: the one without the seam. The tie has a thick end and a thin end. You want the thin end to be short - much shorter than you'd think. Hold on to the thin end so it doesn't slip. Then, move the thick end across... ...behind and around... ...and then up and through towards the back. Then you move it across again... ...up from the back, and then tuck into the front bit. From here you can smooth out the knot, adjust the lenght of the tie and fiddle about until you're satisfied with the look. Chances are you'll have to tie it and re-tie it a few times before you get the hang of it. On the back of the tie, there's sometimes a little strap. You can tuck the thin bit here so it looks a bit neater. If you want to look really snazzy, you can attach it to your shirt with a tie clip! And you're done! Looking sharp, kiddo! Until next time!
