012 – Birthday Presents

Hey kiddo! Take a seat, let's answer some questions! Jacque Lanterne asks... 'What was your most cherished birthday present you ever received?' Oh boy. That's a good one, Jacque. I got some real good presents in my day, let me tell you. I'm an only child, and an only grandchild on my dad's side. Birthdays could get extravagant when I was little. In fact, I've had a hard time celebrating birthdays as I grew older. There's a lot of emotional baggage. Gift giving can be a good source of guilt. Relatives giving you expensive things that... well, that you didn't ask for. You know that saying, it's the thought that counts? As long as your heart is in the right place, the gift itself doesn't matter. And that's true to some extent. But people think about it the wrong way around. Just giving a gift - any gift - isn't enough to be considered thoughtful. Giving a gift that reflect that persons interests, personality, likes... there's the effort that matters. Your Dad absorbs a warm, glowing heart. Sorry, seems like I got off on a tangent there. I don't know what my most cherished birthday present was, but I can tell you about my best birthday. I think I was turning fourteen or fifteen. My birthday fell on a weekday, and no one had time to celebrate until the weekend. I also had theatre rehearsals that night - I was an extra on a local production of Grease. There was something so freeing about doing something I really cared about. No pressure to entertain relatives, no demand for a party. Just being myself, doing what I love. Oh! There's a bonus question at the bottom here! Do you accept fanart? Oh! Oh my gosh! That would make my day!
