024 – The Best Bird

Hello kiddo! Summer has finally arrived in Sweden, so I figured I'd get some Vitamin D for once while I answer questions! Yan the Frog Man: I have a question: what bird is your favorite? I like chickens, especially americaunas and orpingtons. Ah, I love all these animal questions! Chickens are great, but if I had to pick a favorite bird it would have to be... MALLARDS! I love ducks in general. There are some really good ones people might not have heard of. Mandarin ducks are incredible! They're native to East Asia, but I've seen a couple in Sweden. I'm obsessed with the color of Cayuga ducks. And buffleheads are so dang cute! Look at their little heads! If you want a fun duck to look at, you can't go wrong with an Indian Runner duck! And of course, there's the Muscovy Duck that eats slugs and I love them for healing me of slug trauma. But nothing really beats a good ol' fashioned mallard. The way the sun catches the green on their heads, their little quacking noises... how resilient they are. Did you know mallards can survive in temperatures of minus 40c? Incredible. I learned that a few years back when my roommate and I found a mallard drake sitting alone by the road near our apartment. It didn't look injured, but it also wasn't moving much and it was freezing cold that night. So I, uh... I picked it up and carried it back to our apartment. It stuck its little beak into my jacket. We kept it in our bathroom over night, to give it a rest and in the morning I called animal control. They told us it probably had a little concussion, and that it was safe to release it. So we did! Here's a picture of it chilling next to the toilet! That was a good night. Okay, enough duck reminiscing. I think we have time for one more animal question. Madame Mystery: 'Very important question here: do you like sharks?' I love sharks. Well, I don't love sharks the same way I love ducks. But they are important, beautiful animals that have a bad rep for no reason. Thanks for that, Steven Spielberg. Sharks deserve better. More people die every year from champagne corks but you don't see any summer blockbusters about that. I like the shape of sharks, and how they move. It's very soothing to watch. They're fun to draw, too! Good angles, good lines, good color. They're so old as a species, too! I'm sure you've heard of Megalodon, but have you ever seen an anvil shark? What a cool animal! Alright, I'm going to stay with the ducks for a bit longer. You go on with your day. See you next time! I love you!
