007 – Style pt 1

Phew! That was a lot of hard, emotional work we did! Let’s see what else we got in the ol’ email...  Ah! Nobadstory asks...  'Hey Dad, how do I get a style? Can I only have one style? Like, clothes?' You’ve come to the right person, kid.  I may not look it, but I’ve watched the first fifteen seasons of Project Runway at least three times. I’ve got style coming out of my ears!  First, let’s talk about what a style is. Spoiler: it’s not what the magazines are trying to sell you.  Your style is how you express yourself through your appearance — clothes, hair, makeup, accessories, everything. You kids might call it your brand but I’m not about that capitalistic nightmare. Finding your style takes time, and might require a little soul searching. What’s your aesthetic? How do you want to portray yourself to other people?  Most importantly, what feels like you?  A good start is going online and finding pictures of what you like. This can be something straight forward like pictures of clothes or hairstyles you like, or something more abstract that fits your vibe. Once you’re happy with your collection, let it sit for a little while. Don’t think about it, don’t look at it.  Then come back and edit. Delete the pictures that don’t spark joy anymore. Be critical! I usually save eighteen pictures of the same haircut and then I realise I’ve gone too far.  As you work with your collection, you’ll start to make connection. An accessory keeps popping up, a color, maybe a pattern. This is what you can start building your style on. Here are some examples from my current moodboard, to give you an idea of what it can look like.  Building a personal style is the opposite of following a specific fashion trend. Like a magpie, you pick and choose bits of looks that you respond to.  It’s an emotional exploration of how your inner self reflects in the physical world. And no magazine can answer what that means for you.  I’m gonna give you some time to digest this and start working on your collection. Have fun with it! Be brave! If you decide that bold orange sparkly jumpsuit isn’t for you after all, you just have to delete a picture. There’s literally no risk at this stage.  Next time, we’ll talk about the part of having a style that does come with a risk... finding clothes.  Take care of yourselves, kiddos. I love you.
